Does alcohol intake affect erection?

Q: I am 26 years old and have been married for 10 months. I do not smoke but drink only during the weekends at home with my family. My wife insists on having sex in the night after drinks. I get nervous because, I do feel the urge but there is no erection when I have drinks. I feel really bad about disappointing my wife and she really becomes angry. She gives me an explanation that she’s heard that most couples have good sex even after drinks. Is it that there is something wrong with me or is it that it’s a psychological hindrance? Is there a medicine for this?

A:It depends upon the quantity of alcohol you consume. An amount of 30-50 ml of drink (the usual peg) acts as a good stimulant while larger quantities result in poor performance. There is a saying that alcohol provokes the desire but takes away the performance (in large quantities). If you are able to have normal sex without alcohol, there is nothing to worry about. However, if there is a problem in getting good erection in non-alcoholic performance, please seek treatment for the same.
