Can my mother undergo hip resurfacing surgery?

Q: My 54 years old diabetic mother needs hip resurfacing surgery. She cannot walk because of the pain. Please advise.

A:Hip resurfacing surgery is not a good idea after 55-60yrs of age; go in for a standard hip replacement (cement-less). You can use a large bearing implant; metal on metal or ceramic on ceramic. Discuss with your joint replacement surgeon.
