Can I work out with cervical spondylosis?

Q: I am a 34-year-old woman suffering from cervical spondylosis. I would like to work out in the gym for overall health reasons. Is there any workout I should not do because of my neck condition?

A:

  • You should not do any forward bending, whether from the torso or from the neck, either standing, sitting or lying down.
  • You should do no exercises for the trapezium muscles that lie in the neck: upright rows, shoulder shrugs and shoulder rolls.
