Can I take vitamin C for anaemia?

Q: I want to know if its okay to take vitamin C and centrum? I am anaemic. My doctor says it is okay but I want to be sure. I also had some tests done because I feel tenderness in my abdomen. I have had a colonoscopy and laparoscopy done and an abdominal ultrasound but all tests were normal. I had some blood work done and my SGOT was elevated. I wanted to know if I take vitamins, will it be harmful?

A:You should get a complete blood count and peripheral smear examination done which will reveal if there is anaemia and its type. Vitamin C alone has no role in anaemia but helps absorption of iron in case of iron deficiency anaemia. It is never wise to take any medication, however innocuous it may, be unless there exists an indication for it.
