Are Indian hospitals equipped with decision support systems (DSS)?

Q: In recent technological developments in the Indian healthcare industry such as HMS/HIS etc, has made the industry more reliable and cost effective for both hospitals and patients. I feel there is scope of decision support systems (DSS) that can be a knowledge bridge between doctors and the knowledge industry. In UK most of the hospitals are equipped with DSS and they have benefited from it. Recently, I read about a study in Brigham and Womens Hospital in US that enabled them to save 200 US$ per year. What are Indians doing about DSS?

A:HIS has become the norm in all Indian hospitals aspiring for international recognition and or medical tourism. DSS on the other hand is still quite low in penetrating Indian hospitals, though there are some individual practitioners who do use DSS in their clinical practice. The following are the Indian organisations promoting health informatics:

  • Indian Medical Informatics Association
  • Indian Medical Informatics (Portal)
  • MedIndia (Healthcare and Medical Portal)
