The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of lung health. And, this year, the theme of World Lungs Day highlights “Lung Health for All”. Every year, on September 25, the day is observed to spread awareness about the importance of lung health. This year, the Forum Of International Respiratory Societies has decided to look into the following areas to close the gap. “1.The global burden of the major respiratory diseases and the impact of COVID, with a focus on lower- and middle-income countries. 2.The importance of early detection and screening. 3. Reducing inequalities in screening, diagnosis and treatment of chronic lung conditions.”

The main objective of World Lung Day is to spread awareness about lung health worldwide. This year's theme is Lung Health for All. To spread awareness, Dr. Ravi Shekhar Jha, Director and Unit Head Pulmonology, Fortis Escorts Hospital, Faridabad shared the information.

Dr. Ravi Shekhar Jha said, "With the increasing air pollution and environmental degradation, it is even more important to take care of lung health. Today, with the pace of progressing air pollution many people have started to report problems related to respiratory health at a very young age. The smog, polluted fumes, and suspension of industrial chemicals in the air make the quality of air that we breathe deplorably and hence clog the small ventricles present in our lungs. Due to this blockage, the passage of healthy and fresh air gets obstructed in the lungs and hence the burden of patients reporting COPD is increasing.

As per certain researchers, it is also believed that PM2.5 triggers inflammation in the lungs and causes lung cells with pre-existing mutations to start forming a tumor, signifying air pollution to be one of the major causes of increasing cases of lung cancer. Research also suggests that long-term exposure to air pollution can add to the development of various lung conditions and outdoor air pollution contributes to lung cancer. It has also been seen that long-term exposure to air pollution is linked to the development of asthma in many patients. Hence, as responsible citizens, it is important for us to reduce the sources of air pollution and make the environment in which we live a healthy and positive atmosphere thrive in", said Dr. Ravi Shekhar Jha."
