Will I be normal if my navel is surgically removed?

Prof Suneet Sood
Consultant Surgeon,
Malaysia

Q: A month ago there was pus discharging from my umbilicus (navel). My family doctor told me that it is due to infection. So he referred me to go to the surgeon. Then the surgeon cleaned the umbilicus and advised me to clean with hydrogen peroxide and betadine daily; but now there still is pus discharge. The surgeon says that he will have to remove the umbilicus. Kindly advise me that what are the side effects if the navel is removed by operation.

A:The navel probably needs to be removed. There is no harm in living without a navel. However, please check with your doctor about the success of the surgery. The procedure may have a low recurrence rate, and you should be aware of this.
