Will I be able to get rid of the leprosy marks?

Dr Kamlendar Singh
Senior Consultant, Dermatology and Venereology,
Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi

Q: I 57 years old and had leprosy on my hands and took multi drug therapy (paucibacillary). Later, at the same spot, I had an injury and the wound didn't heal. The doctor said it was TB and sent me for directly observed therapy (DOTS). I received treatment and got cured. The only problem is that I still have no sensation at the wound site and the colour is not returning to normal. The doctor gave me Emolene cream to apply. I am tired of going to the doctor, please help.

A:With treatment leprosy will be cured. The organisms causing it will be killed. Further damage from the disease will not occur. However, the damage already caused by the disease before the treatment was started will remain. What you have is the residual damage in the form of impaired sensation and light colour along with dryness in the patch. This will persist. It is akin to putting out a fire; whatever has got burnt will remain burnt.
