Q: My 7 years old baby is suffering from biliary atresia. The doctor has suggested liver transplantation. Is this possible and how many results have been positive after liver transplantation in children?
A:Liver transplantation is the only viable option in such cases. This will have to be a living-related transplantation where a part of the donor's liver will be transplanted into the baby. The donor will have to be from among the immediate family. Results of this type of transplantation are good. In the best centres in the world, these results approach 90-95%. In India, you can expect about 80% results.
