Why is my mother unable to lift her eyelids?

Dr Arun Mishra
Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon, UK

Q: My 37 years old mother cannot lift her eyelids properly. The doctor said that her eye nerves are weak therefore she is unable to open her eyelids completely. Also, she cannot move her eyeball completely in the left or right directions. Her eyesight is fine. Please advise.

A:This condition is called ptosis, which may be there since childhood or birth i.e. congenital ptosis. Try to consult an oculoplastic eye surgeon who will suggest surgery for this condition.

You and the surgeon have to consider two things, 1 - if the eyes are not moving properly, then it can cause double vision after the operation. 2 - if the lid is over corrected, it can cause inability to close and cause dry eye complications, (exposure keratopathy).
