Why is my father getting hiccups continuously?

Dr Venk Mani

Leigh Infirmary, England

Q: My father is a 42 years old male. He is getting continuous hiccups. They stop for a while and then start again. Please give me a solution.

A:Hiccups occur when there is an abnormal contraction of the diaphragm. This happens when its nerve supply (phrenic nerve) in the neck gets irritated. Usually it settles with sedation; but when and if it keeps recurring, I suggest you consult a physician for appropriate investigations.
