Why has my skin become itchy after skin grafting?

Q: I am 27 years old. I lost a substantial amount of skin and muscles in an accident. I underwent a partial skin graft (taken from the thigh and grafted on my upper arm) 3.5 months back. Recently, the donor and the receptor areas have become very itchy. Please advise.

A:It is not usual for the donor and recipient areas to become dry after skin grafting. You need to do the following: 1. Apply lot of cold cream / Vaseline / coconut oil to itching area.2. Use a compression garment.3. Sometimes application of topical steroids like Ledercort is helpful. 4. You should consult your treating doctor for further information.
