Q: My 13 years old daughter started having periods two years back. She was diagnosed with polycystic ovarian disease (PCOS) in her left ovary and was put on a three-month PRIMOLUT-N course and a three-month OVRAL-G course by the gynaecologist to regularise her periods. But since the last course ended five months back, she hasn't got her periods. She has been tested negative for thyroid disorder. Why isn’t she getting her periods?

A:Many young girls when they make a debut into their menstrual lives can have extremely irregular periods with or without having PCOS in one or both ovaries. She probably will benefit from remaining on some sort of cyclical oral pills for 6-12 months more, lose weight- if she is overweight by diet and exercise. Thereafter the situation should be reviewed by a gynaecologist with expertise in this disorder.
