Why does my son get blood in his stools?

Q: My 20 months old son is having occasional blood in his stools. The doctor prescribed lactulose solution thinking it to be due to constipation. He has been taking this for more than a month. However, the blood still comes once or twice a week. We did a pathology test of the stools, which was normal. My son otherwise maintains good food habits with fibre rich food. Please suggest some remedy? Can it be piles or anything serious? Is this a common problem in children of this age group?

A:I think blood in stool cannot be neglected. Common cause is fissure due to constipation. But if it’s persisting despite no constipation and if no evidence of fissure R/o other possibilities like infection / polyp. Please consult a Paediatric Gastroenterologist.
