Why does my daughter have a tag near the anus?

Dr Francis Seow-Choen
Associate Professor, Mt. Elizabeth Medical Centre, Singapore

Q: My 6 years old daughter has a painless skin tag near her anus. My physician told me that it is not due to fissure or piles and there is nothing to worry about. However, it seems that after four months, the size has increased somewhat. Initially, my child was not used to going to the toilet regularly though now for the last six months it is regularised. She is prone to hard stool. Please help.

A:The tag is indeed due to hard stools. Hard stools are most often caused by too much fibre in her diet. It is nothing to worry about. Give her less fibre and she will be ok.
