Why do toes swell in winter?

Prof B Krishna Rau
Professor and Head of Dept. of Surgery,
Sri Ramachandra Medical College, Chennai

Q: In the winter season, when the minimum temperature goes below 5 degree Celsius with fog in Delhi, a common problem of swelling of toes is seen in most ladies and even gents. Is this due to cold? Can you tell us the nutrition or medicine for correcting this problem?

A:Swelling seen is usually due to a minor form of frostbite. Keeping the extremities warm will prevent this water accumulation. Nutrition has no role in this. Warmth by increasing blood flow removes water accumulation.
