Why do I see fluorescent flashes of light?

Dr Arun Mishra

Q: I am a 22-year-old male. Why do I see a fluorescent flash of light when I get up in the morning? When I see an image of black spots or dots in a book, they seem to emit a fluorescent violet light. What is wrong with my eyes? I am myopic since birth.

A:This may be due to slight pull of jelly in side the eye (Vitreous) on the retina. As you are very myopic your vitreous is likely to be liquefied and occasionally some fibres break in it, which may also give you floating objects, like a spiders web, especially when you look against a bright background. This is generally harmless and does not require any treatment.
