Q: I am 61 years old man and the middle fingers of both my hands get stuck when I use force to hold something. I have to use the other hand to open my middle finger and this opens with pain. It looks bent all the time and I cannot fully fold my hand in the first attempt, it feels stiff. My right hand’s finger is more affected than the left one. Please advise.

A:You are probably suffering from a condition called trigger finger, which is due to thickening of the sheath covering the tendons of your finger. Treatment is either by physiotherapy, or by local cortisone injection. Any orthopaedic surgeon should be able to look after you.
