Q: My one-year-old son's right kidney is 10% and left kidney is 90% functioning as shown in the diethylene triamine pentaacetic acid (DTPA) Scan. He had posterior urethral valves (PUV) from birth. Which department should I approach for treatment? What are the chances of improvement?
A:Posterior urethral valve (PUV) is usually associated with other urogenital defects and your child also has right kidney, which is poorly functioning. It may be due to either scarring or dysplastic kidney. You should get DMSA scan done and also a radionuclide DRCG and see nephrologists. Improvement will depend on if there is a reversible factor, which can be treated.
