Q: My friend is suffering from kidney shrinkage. Both the kidneys have contracted and she is on dialysis. Is there any other way except kidney transplant to cure this problem and if this is the only way, from where can we get a donor?
A:Kidney transplant is the best and most cost effective treatment for chronic kidney failure. Kidney transplantation in India is governed by Transplantation of Human Organ Act and as per this act, parents, siblings, spouse, children 18 years and above can donate a kidney if medically found fit to donate a kidney to their related patient. Buying and selling of kidney is not allowed under this act. So you should explore the feasibility of a donor in the family.
