When does the alkaline phosphate come to normal after hepatitis A?

Dr BS Anand
Gastroenterologist,
Houston, USA

Q: After how many weeks or months does the alkaline phosphate level come back to normal after the hepatitis A infection?

A:In hepatitis A virus infection, the serum alkaline phosphatase should return to normal within 4-6 weeks. However, in a small proportion of patients the disease has a prolonged cholestatic phase and the liver tests may remain abnormal for as long as 4-6 months. However, this is a benign process and most patients eventually recover spontaneously.
