Q: I am a 22 years old man weighing 72 kg. I was diagnosed with hypertension seven years back. It used to be around 140/90 mmHg at that time. The problem was diagnosed when I complained of recurrent headaches. I was overweight at that time. The doctor started Metolar (50 mg) daily, which I am still taking. The blood pressure is now under control with medication. Recently, I talked to a relative who himself is a cardiologist. He recommended that I should consult a doctor and get my medicine changed because Metolar may lead to diabetes and impotency in the long run. I am really worried. Do I need to switch over to another medicine? What tests should I undergo? My relative also recommended me to undergo a renal Doppler to rule out secondary hypertension.
A:As per query, your blood pressure is now controlled with medication. In view of the blood pressure being detected at an early age it is important to rule out secondary causes of hypertension particularly, renal artery stenosis. You should have an abdominal ultrasound and renal Doppler studies. You are advised to contact a good physician / cardiologist wherever you stay. In any case you should try to adopt healthy lifestyle related measures like keeping weight in the normal range, take low salt diet, do regular physical activity and avoid alcohol and smoking if you have the habit.
