What should be done for a broken neck?

Q: I am suffering from a broken neck. The doctor has asked me to use a neck collar and some pain medication and told that this will take 6 to 8 weeks to heal. But the pain subsides only for sometime after taking pain medicine. The pain increases when I try to sleep or lie down. Can you suggest any strong pain medicine or any other treatment?

A:You have written that you have a broken neck. Do you mean a fracture? Please consult orthopaedic surgeon with x- rays. This might require fixation. If no fracture then contact physiotherapist for treatment of short wave diathermy/ultrasonic/TENS.
