What is the treatment for peripheral neuritis?

Dr Venk Mani
Consultant Gastro-enterologist Physician,
Leigh Infirmary, England

Q: I am 90 yrs old and very active. Recently I have been diagnosed with having peripheral neuritis of hands and feet which is progressing very fast. The doctor has prescribed vitamin B12 which is not having any affect and the neuritis is spreading very fast. I am not a diabetic, nor is it there in my family and I do not drink or smoke. What cure is available to me?

A:Your peripheral neuritis has come on rather acutely about 45 days ago and this to me is suggestive of a viral infection especially when you have been healthy otherwise with no chronic problems like diabetes. Generally speaking, vitamin B12 has little or no effect on peripheral neuropathy unless it is due to nutritional deficiency. In several instances the neuropathy clears gradually but you need to have regular physiotherapy which might help. I strongly suggest that you consult a neurologist and get investigated to get a correct underlying diagnosis for correct treatment.
