What is the treatment for opioid addiction?

Q: I am a 38 years old male doctor with a successful practice. A few years back I got cough and took syrup codeine phosphate which relieved it. But I have been taking codeine syrup even after that and am now addicted to it. I know its side effects but am unable to resist. Please advise me.

A:Opioid addiction is addressed by going for detoxification first and then taking Naltrexone 50 mg daily. If you take the drug without detoxing, you will experience forced withdrawal. Naltrexone helps with craving and preventing further relapse. Please consult a psychiatrist and also go to ‘12 steps’ meetings.
