What is the treatment for hydropneumothorax?

Dr M S Kanwar
Senior Consultant, Chest Disease-Sleep Disorders, Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, Delhi

Q: My CT scan (CECT) of the chest reveals evidence of a large cystic SOL in the left lobe region with an internal fluid level suggesting possibility of an infected brochogenic cyst. Differential diagnosis includes loculated hydropneumothorax. What are the treatment options?

A:The symptoms and past history and x-rays often clearly favour the possibility of bronchogenic cyst vs Hydropneumothorax. CT should further clarify the issue. Treatment is surgical removal in the former and ICT drainage in the latter.
