What is the treatment for ear infection?

Dr Anil Safaya
Senior Specialist & Head,
Department of Otolaryngology,
Ibri Regional Referral Hospital,
Sultanate of Oman

Q: I am a 36 years old woman having ear infection, which started recently. The doctor advised Amoxillin tablets. Even after 5 days the pus has not stopped. When I visited the doctor again, he advised microscopic surgery. Is it safe? Is there any alternative?

A:For every discharging ear, surgery is not always the answer. The ear needs to be dried up first with medications and only after the medications fail, surgical option is resorted to. I would prefer a medical management initially for at least 1-2 months. You can always consult another specialist.
