What is the test for fatherhood?

Dr IC Verma
Sr. Consultant and Head, Department of Medical Genetics,
Sir Ganga Ram Hospital,
New Delhi

Q: What is the test of fatherhood? Is it only the DNA or are there some other tests?

A:To determine fatherhood, the most accurate test is the one based on DNA studies. The bands observed in the father and child should match. Of course there are other methods also like HLA studies or blood groups. The former is accurate but the blood groups may not be informative all the time. In Delhi Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Dept of Genetics is conducting the DNA based tests for paternity. These tests are also available in Hyderabad and Calcutta, and perhaps other places.
