Q: In the anomaly scan done during the sixth month, the problem of a single umbilical artery (SUA)was detected. In the 27th week, we lost our baby. Labour was induced and the baby was taken out. What is the recurrence of SUA? What is the spacing required?
A:The recurrence risk should be less than 1%. You may need to wait about 6-8 months and use a contraceptive -condoms/pills. Also your wife can start on folic acid 5mgs /day for 3-6 months prior to trying for pregnancy again and when pregnant have an ultrasound examination for anomalies by about 12 weeks and again at 16 weeks.
