Dr Subash Gupta
Surgical Gastroenterologist,
Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, New Delhi

Q: I have had problem of achalasia for past 2 years. I found difficulty in eating both solids and liquids as there was resistance at lower eosophagus. I had endoscopy and barium swallow done which confirmed my problem as achalasia. Last week I got dilatation done through balooning. Will this problem reccur and what precautions can be taken to avoid achalasia?

A:May recur. A permanent solution is surgical cardiomyotomy where the sphincter is divided. No precautions but sometimes acid reflux should be avoided. Regular proton pump inhibitor such as Ocid can help.
