Q: I am a 23 years old male. I had a kidney transplant 10 years back. Please tell me about low urea food that I can eat. Also, what is the normal range of Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) after kidney transplant?

A:Normal Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) for a well functioning transplanted kidney would be less than 60 based upon the age and gender of the patient. There is nothing like low urea food. Instead, you can certainly have high protein diet averaging around 65-70 grams daily as long as it meets your daily nutritional calorie requirement. Proteins are not proven to harm transplanted kidney nor have they been proven to cause significant progressive damage to kidneys.
