What is the mode of treatment for spinal canal stenosis?

Dr Arvind Kulkarni

Bombay Hospital,

Q: My 56 years old father is a chronic patient of backache. His recent CT report has shown tight canal stenosis at lumbar 4/5 with disc extrusion into the left lateral recess. He can not be stationary for long time but once he starts walking, he is fine. Please suggest the mode of treatment available and success rate for the same.

A:This patient has canal stenosis with disc prolapse. He will improve with Microlumbar decompression and discectomy, which has a success rate of close to 90%.
