Q: I am 46 years old male. About 6 months back I developed marked depression associated with anxiety. The precipitating factor, I believe, was financial problems. However, I consulted a psychiatrist and was subsequently treated with Paroxetine (controlled release tab). I have been greatly benefited by the treatment, and today I am totally cured. I would like to know in detail as to what is the mechanism of action of Paroxetine in cases of depression & depressive psychosis mixed with anxiety.
A:Paroxetine belongs to a group of medicines called Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs). They help neurotransmission of impulses. I hope you have either discontinued the medication or planning to discontinue gradually. There is no point in taking the drug if you are fine now.
