What is the first aid for snake bite?

Q: How do we treat a poisonous snake bite? Are bites of different varieties of snakes treated differently? Or do we have an anti-snake venom that works against most venoms? Anti-venoms are not easily available in far-off places, then what steps should be taken to provide effective first-aid?

A:There are some common anti-venoms but none are without risk. Sucking out the poison or applying tourniquets are not helpful. Keep the patient calm, clean the wound, give a broad spectrum antibiotic and tetanus toxoid and seek medical advice.
