What is the cause for deep breathing?

Dr Irwin Ziment

Q: I need to take deep breaths quite often. Is there any remedy?

A:Deep breathing usually results from anxiety, with excitement or even too much introspection. Deep breathing can occur with acidosis due to diabetes, starvation and similar causes, affecting metabolism. In contrast, it could indicate hyperventilation, lung disease, carbon monoxide exposure and so on. If persistent occasional deep breaths are a problem, a psychologic cause is likely to be the explanation.
