What is portal gastropathy?

Q: I have been diagnosed with portal gastropathy of the liver. My doctor does not speak about it. Please send me some information about this. What is the treatment?

A:Portal gastropathy and portal hypertension go hand in hand. Portal hypertension is a condition where blood draining out of the intestine returns to the heart after going through the liver. This condition can happen if the liver is cirrhotic or if the portal vein is blocked. So one can have portal gastropathy without any liver disease. Please send me details of the liver test and a copy of the ultrasound report for us to tell you whether you have liver disease.
