What is Lofgren's syndrome?

Q: My sister-in-law (49 years old) was diagnosed last week as having Lofgren's Syndrome. I understand that it is not a very common illness and will ultimately prove fatal. My mother-in-law is very worried. I would like to get more details. Can you please provide a basic description of this problem, what treatment is available and when will she recover?

A:Please do not panic! Lofgren's syndrome involves a constellation of features which may include fever, a skin condition called erythema nodosum and enlargement of some lymph nodes in the chest. It is usually due to a condition called sarcoidosis, even though a similar picture can occur with tuberculosis. Treatment depends on the underlying condition and may involve a short course of steroids. The outlook is generally not bad and recovery may take place in a few weeks.
