Q: I am 29 years old weighing 83 kg and 175 cm tall. I took a blood test recently. The results indicated a cholesterol: 259 mg/dl; SGOT/AST: 90 IU/L and SGPT/ALT: 149 IU/L. Why are these values abnormally high? Kindly advise.
A:There are many causes for elevation of the tests - medications, viral, metabolic and immune.Your doctor can tell you what tests are required. A very common cause is fat in the liver, especially in people who are overweight and in whom the cholesterol is high. I would recommend weight loss, and diet initially to reduce the cholesterol.
