What does a bulky uterus signify?

Q: My menstrual cycle is due since 20 days and the urine test shows negative for pregnancy? The physician feels that my uterus is bulky? What does this indicate?

A:A large number of causes exist for a bulky uterus. A markedly enlarged, bulky uterus suggests fibroids; a mildly enlarged, boggy, symmetric uterus suggests adenomyosis. It may also be due to endometrial tumours, ovarian cysts etc. An ultrasound examination will help in delineating the underlying cause.
