Q: I am a 27 years old female planning for a baby. I failed GTT test but my HbA1c levels are normal. I am taking glycomet (500 mg) twice a day and a folic acid tablet too.

A:Before planning the baby, you will need to have the blood sugar under control. It is preferable to stop the metformin and control the blood sugar on a diabetic diet alone if possible. The renal function tests and HbA1c levels should be normal. Once pregnant - all these may again get deranged and a follow up throughout the pregnancy will be necessary. In some situations if the blood sugar is not controlled, especially in the last three months, even insulin may be necessary.
