Q: My 15-year-old son has been advised for teether cord operation. What are the side effects of this surgery?
A:It is important to know why surgery has been advised at this age. Does he have a preceding problem. Has there been any worsening of nerve related symptoms. If there is progressive nerve damage then surgery has to be done, no matter what the risks are. Otherwise, tethered cord surgery can result in some nerve deficit and spinal infections are a worry; however small the risks.
