What are dietary recommendations for a person with arthritis?

Q: My elder sister is suffering from arthritis. I want to know what all vegetarian food can she consume?

A:Diet seems to play an important role in reducing the inflammation of the joint. Polyunsaturated fats provoke anti-inflammatory effects as compared to saturated fats. Consequently polyunsaturated fatty products (fish, saffola/sunflower oil) are preferred over saturated fatty acid products (meat, eggs, butter, ghee, cakes, puddings).Total fat consumption must be reduced, especially in osteoarthiritis so as to encourage weight loss. Less calories result in less weight, which means less strain on joints and thus, less irritation of joints and less joint pain. Patients with gout must avoid red meat (beef, pork, mutton) and alcohol.
