Should I take so many medicines during pregnancy?

Dr Ashok Khurana
Director, Genitourinary and Vascular Ultrasound,
The Ultrasound Lab,
New Delhi

Q: I am a 27 years old woman and 19 weeks pregnant. In an ultrasound, which was done in the 18th week, the left maternal uterine artery shows a notch in early diastole and a mildly increased impedance to flow with RI of 0.82. The right maternal uterine shows a normal flow with RI of 0.55. The doctor recommended a triple test also, which shows the normal result. Now the doctor has added two medicines Lycowax twice in a day and Ecosprin 75 once in a day. Should I take so many medicines?

A:Abnormal uterine artery flow predisposes to certain complications in later pregnancy. These include high blood pressure, low birth weight babies and the need for premature deliveries, emergency caesarean sections and intensive nursery care for the newborn. These can be minimised by improving flow through the uterine arteries with anti-oxidant medication and low dose aspirin given as tablets. These are the tablets that the doctor has prescribed. When taken under medical supervision these are safe for the unborn baby and for the mother.
