Q: My 11 year old son is suffering from mild mental retardation due to ring formation on chromosome 18. His IQ is 55. Kindly suggest the remedial action for his problem. Also I want to know about the future complications.
A:The ring chromosome cannot be removed from the body. For answering what can go wrong with him in future one can only say after seeing and evaluating the patient, and the extent of the missing part of chromosome 18. During the formation of the ring, it is likely that some part of it is lost, which is the cause of the problem in the child.
