Q: Do we have the facilities to test for the gene of APKD. I ask this as my husband"s father is on Dialysis and we are in very tight situation.
A:APKD is an autosomal dominant disorder, where the disease is passed on from the affected person to his children with a risk of 50 % for each person. There are also two genes whose defect can lead to the disorder. Therefore one has to find the change in the gene in a particular family before one can diagnose a person in the presymptomatic phase, and also make a prenatal diagnosis. For more details specific to the family a medical geneticist should be consulted.
