Q: Is there any special diet for autistic/hyperactive children of age 5 years? My doctor is suggesting Attentrol for my 5 years old hyperactive son. Shall I use this? Are there any side effects?

A:There is no special diet for children suffering from hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or autism. Drugs for ADHD should be last resort when psychotherapy has failed.Attentrol is the brand name; the name of the medicine is atomoxetine which is also sold under other brand names such as Axepta. The safety and efficacy of atomoxetine has not been established for children below 6 years; hence it is not approved for use in younger patients. The side effects of atomoxetine include: Abdominal pain, decreased appetite, weight loss, anorexia, dry mouth, early waking, somnolence, dizziness, mood swings, irritability, suicidal ideation. mydriasis (excessive dilation of the pupils), inflammation of skin, fatigue, stomach upset, upper respiratory tract infections, palpitations, urinary disorders, and sweating. Discontinue if there are signs of liver injury.
