Q: My daughter (one month old) is undergoing the regular immunization program. The paediatrician has suggested that she should be vaccinated against Haemophilus influenzae b (Hib). This Hib vaccine is to be given along with DPT/Oral Polio in three doses. I am not sure whether this vaccination is a must or not. I would be extremely thankful if you can give your valuable suggestions on this.

A:Hib vaccine protects against infection by an organism called Haemophilus influenzae type B. This can cause a nasty meningitis in small babies and therefore is often recommended by doctors. It is however an optional vaccine and is not an essential vaccine in the immunization schedule. You may or may not opt for it.
