Is recurrence of esotropia possible?

Q: My daughter was diagnosed with Prominent V-pattern esotropia (both inferior oblique muscles were active and both superior oblique muscles were under active). She underwent surgery: Recession of medial rectus, both eyes; Disinsertion of inferior oblique muscles both eyes. Subsequent to the surgery she only had a small esotropia at near vision for a few days and then was fine. A couple of days later she fell sick - UTI and fever. All of a sudden she developed a slight squint again. Is recurrence possible so suddenly or is it due to the fever?

A:Your daughter seems to be having a residual esotropia that had also been noticed soon after surgery as per your statement. Yes, it is possible to have a recurrence of squint(though not as much as before) if the alignment is not obtained after the first surgery, or if binocularity is not present. Your child is 7 years old and should have a re-evaluation and a re-surgery to achieve alignment is required. What is the status of her binocularity at present? That shall determine the prognosis.
