Is prostatitis treatable?

Q: I am a 19 years old male suffering from chronic prostatitis for the last two years. I was under medication for a year but the problem remains. I have stopped taking the medicines for the last six months. I am feeling sexually weak as well. I also feel like that some semen is jammed in penis while ejaculation. Is prostatitis treatable?

A:Prostatitis can sometimes be a difficult disease to treat because no regimen has proven effective in all patients. Flodart is a combination of flomax and avodart. Flomax can cause retrograde ejaculation and hence you may feel ejaculate getting stuck. Avodart can cause decrease in sexual interest and mood. I would suggest you stop all medications like you have done and consult an urologist. You can consider taking an antibiotic like ciprofloxacin and ibuprofen for about 6 weeks. When you do this, follow-up with an urologist regularly. Ibuprofen can cause stomach ulcers and should be taken with anti-ulcer medication such as famotidine.
