Q: Is it true that the Indian cornea being thin when compared to the western ones, is not particularly suitable for LASIK surgery? There are apprehensions that chances of corneal damage due to the thin cornea are more in Indians.
A:It is not proven that Indian Corneas are thinner in general. However, worldwide, corneas of high myopia are generally thinner. The safety of a LASIKprocedure on account of corneal thickness is a very individualised concernand applies to each person independently. The LASIK surgeon has to verifythe corneal thickness of the particular patient with specific relation tothe power to be treated and zone diameter to assess the safety of thetreatment.
